KCAI Printshop Tour

The Kansas City Art Institute’s (KCAI) Printmaking Department is a thriving art factory in an interesting mid-western city that has a long history of printmaking and BBQ. I was recently lucky enough to spend sometime with the faculty and students at KCAI, a school I had been hearing good things about for years. I was delighted to discover all the good rumors were true. Please join me on a visual tour of their cozy, bright space.

North light abounds in this cozy space. The shop building has the feel of a 70’s era campus architecture that, like the Millennium Falcon, has been modded so far beyond stock that only the folks working there truly know it’s limits.

P1100520

Litho studio. Lots of glass, ventilation, and light!

The majors have generous dedicated desks in a range of co-working spaces that would make a good case study for an article on workspace design and innovation.

P1100471

I was quite taken by the way the faculty and technicians had made liberal use of the vinyl plotter to make their own signs (as opposed to the laser prints adhered with packing tape to most printshop walls).

P1100473

String T-P dispenser hack.

P1100474

Color-coded!

P1100475

A neatly organized letterpress area.

P1100479

Every shop should have one of these.

P1100482

Maybe the most adorable blanket labeling system ever.

Trophies abound!

P1100491

P1100492

Etiquette is clearly stated.

P1100495

Amazingly, the shop has baths for aluminum, zinc, steel, and copper. A boon to poor students in a decade of expensive and fluctuating metal prices, but also requiring quite a bit of extra signage. The faculty reported no real issues of cross contamination.

P1100501

Sometimes it takes three typefaces to really catch someone’s attention.

P1100502

P1100505

Graining sink porn, for those into that sort of thing.

P1100506

The Jack Lemon plaque.

P1100511

Where to begin?

P1100513

This is only the small stones in their collection.

P1100517

If etching has an etiquette, then Litho has the Lowdown.

P1100518

It was never clear to me if this sign (above) was a gag or not, either way, a hilarious example of entrepreneurialism at work.

P1100519

Interesting tympan holding system.

P1100522

Communal tables.

P1100523

P1100530

A modest but well-equiped digital lab, with a range of large format printers.

P1100531

Every shop should have one of these.

P1100532

Student co-working space.

P1100535

Screen printing.

P1100536

P1100539

Not sure which saint this alter is depicting.

P1100540

P1100541

Further evidence young people are using the internet to change the world.

P1100542

P1100545

Either it was just halloween or this person is building a super suit.

P1100547

More lively student workspace.

P1100632

Perhaps the best unexplained whiteboard class notes ever.

Thank you KCAI for a great visit!

The headline and mobile web tab both read ‘KCIA’ not ‘KCAI’

    Hi Melissa,
    Thank you. Good catch.
Oh, the trials of the dyslexic art writer..

On the flip side, maybe headline typos are the key to activating our community of readers?

  3. I’ve heard a lot of good things about KCIA, glad to see these up!
