PrintAustin: The Contemporary Print

bigmed01PrintAustin is a month long, citywide festival dedicated to celebrating printed art. It’s the first year for the event but it’s safe to say that there’s already quite a bit of momentum. While there are shows all over town at a variety of spaces, Big Medium at Canopy is home to first exhibition of PrintAustin- The Contemporary Print, a juried show meant to showcase the best Texas printmaking has to offer. The exhibition was juried by an esteemed panel from different areas of print: Katherine Brimberry, printer and owner of Flatbed Press,  Francesca Consagra, senior curator of prints, drawings and European paintings at UT’s Blanton Museum of Art, and professor and artist Jeffrey Dell of Texas State University in San Marcos. The show includes a veritable who’s who of Texas print artists: Sabra Booth, Kate Borcherding, Veronica Ceci, Ryan Cronk, Jesus De La Rosa, Tom Druecker, Catherine Dudley, Mary Fischer, Lari Gibbons, Teresa Gomez-Martorell, Annalise Natasha Gratovich, Tim High, Brian Johnson, Padaric Kolander, Adrienne Lichliter, Anna Mavromatis, Ryan O’Malley, Elvia Perrin, Ruthie Powers, Matt Rebholz, Clifton Riley, Ricardo Ruiz, & Samantha Parker Salazar.

As opposed to a distinctive “Texas-style”, the show reflects the diverse and multi-faceted reality of our ever-growing state as well as the diverse and multi-faceted reality of printed art. Simultaneously focused and expansive, the exhibition offers something for every taste. I’ll end the analysis there and let the pictures do the rest of the talking…
