Lawrence Print Week
This weekend I experienced a bit of printmaking heaven right here in Lawrence, KS. Printmakers from across the U.S. gathered here for an art fair that concluded the inaugural Lawrence Print Week. They celebrated and shared printmaking with the public through print demonstrations, exhibitions, and music. The print fair started Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. at the Lawrence Art Center. Printmakers and printmaking organizations of all shapes and sizes set up booths throughout the art center for the event. In the main lobby, printmaking students from the University of Kansas demonstrated the relief printmaking process. Participants contributed in the carving and printing of linoleum and woodblocks onto T-shirts, which were available for purchase during the day.
Printmakers displayed fine art prints and posters throughout the main gallery. Some of the artists present were Lawrence locals Justin Marable, Yoonmi Nam, Clinton Ricketts, Andrew Burkitt, Leslie Kay, and Sally Piller. There were also the artists James Ehlers and Laura Berman. A combination of local and national printmaking institutions were also present, including Evil Prints, Midwest Pressed, Lawrence Lithography, Vahalla Studios, and Vermillion Press. Wonder Fair, a local art gallery, displayed their collection of fine art prints and hand printed merchandise from their shop.
That evening the printmaking band A la Poupée and the Chine-Collés played at a nearby joint, The Burger Stand, in honor of Print Week. The band is made up of 100% printmakers and their set includes original print inspired songs like "Aquatint Blues", "Painter at Heart", "Unfortunate Nature of Lithography", and "Another Bad Impression". It is a good time for printmaking in Lawrence!
