Printshop Tour: Sonoma State University

There’s an old  saying in northern California: “come for the wine, stay for the prints.” Okay, that isn’t really a saying. But it should be.

Printeresting hasn’t been to Sonoma County in a few years, but the last time we were there, the print work made quite an impression. When I asked Nathan Haenlein to send us pictures of these new etchings he’s been making, he also sent us shots from the Sonoma State University printshop where he teaches print with his colleague, Kurt Kemp. Enjoy this photo-tour. More studio shots and student work after the jump.

Etching studio.

Not only are the different studios and classrooms connected by a series of open porches (as opposed to hallways), the art building sits next to a small pond. In case you think there’s no downside to a beautiful body of water next to your printshop, the last time we visited we heard a really hilarious story about a student falling in the pond, portfolio and all. Oh, the dangers of art school in idyllic northern California.

Best litho acid etch chart ever. And yes, that’s officially a challenge from Printeresting.

Matt Hunt.

This message is coming from the internet, Matt Hunt: “cool work but clean up this mess.”

They must be doing something right at SSU with five students from their current graduating print class going on to grad school in the Fall. And here are some links to a few recent alum who are out working in the world: Brian Anderson, Josh Black, David Gerhart, Lori Gilbert, Chris Jehly, Abelardo Cruz Santiago, and Jesse Weiss.

Some office shots of accumulated wall ephemera. Is that Larry David?

More office shots of accumulated wall ephemera.

And we’ll close with some of Haenlein’s repurposed etchings and assorted drawings…

    Hi All,
GREAT post. I spent my formative years in that printshop with Kurt Kemp, Mark Perlman and others. At night, the printshop can rock ‘n roll a bit too. Again, a well deserved post. Cheers!

  5. Sonoma State has the most well equipped printshop where I’ve had the pleasure to work. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Thank you for mentioning my work; There is much more to come!
