Show Me the Money!

The colorful currency above was designed by Dean Potter, Anchorage, Alaska. He submitted speculative examples of legal tender to the Dollar Rede$ign Project. The D.R.P. was the brainchild of Richard Smith “a creative strategy consultant who specializes in transforming brands into wants and desires”; I can think of no better skillset to spearhead a re-branding of the ‘ole greenback.  The project is cleverly framed as an economic stimulus project:

It seems so obvious to us that the ‘only’ realistic way for a swift economic recovery is through a thorough, in-depth, rebranding scheme – starting with the redesign of the iconic US Dollar – it’s the ‘only’ pragmatic way to add some realistic stimulation into our lives! Therefore, you must take part and we really want to see what YOU would do.

The American Dollar has not truly been redesigned since about the 1930s. The Dollar ReDe$ign Project is your opportunity to theoretically ‘change’ that. Yes, technically there are many limitations and complications when it comes to bank note design, but if the Swiss can do it on a regular basis, why can’t we North Americans too. Besides our great ‘rival’, the Euro, looks so spanky in comparison it seems the only clear way to revive this global recession is to rebrand and redesign. Why not ? It seems to work for everyone else …

And in case it wasn’t clear, this is an open call people! Anyone is invited to submit a design, if you are interested go here but be warned the competition is already pretty stiff.  ..Now all they need to do in convince Ben Bernanke that it’s time for some new bling in those old bones.

AramDesigns_DollarBillDesign_FThe modern currency above was designed by Aram Asarian, a Washington D.C. area graphic designer.

Nice idea and worthwhile project. But if Tropicana can’t even change its packaging, what hope does US currency have?
