Mundane Divine

Seeing God in Prints: Indian Lithographs from the Collection of Mark Baron and Elise Boisante’ just closed at the International Print Center of New York (IPCNY), and for those of you who missed this exquisite exhibition, it was a startling example of why the IPCNY is filling a vital niche and how it’s ‘historic’ exhibitions can provide delightful pause in the Chelsea gallery world.
The prints the exhibition are vintage stone lithographs depicting gods and goddesses from the Hindu pantheon. They are described by the curators Andrew McCord and Mark Baron as the sort of everyday decoration that would be found in the homes and businesses. The work has been collected slowly over many trips to India. Mark and Elise are also the print publishers known professionally as Baron/Boisante’ Editions, an intimate publishing endeavor that has been producing interesting work in collaboration with artists, printers and galleries since the mid-eighties.
There was a very nice small catalog/pamphlet produced for the show, with good reproductions and essay; if you contact IPCNY I’m sure they would part with a copy or two for a small donation. Also, the latest Art on Paper gave the exhibit a nice small review and reproduced many of the finer images from the exhibit (March/April 2009, Vol. 13. # 4, pg 72).
