Upcoming Conferences

In the off chance that you weren’t one of the 1800 attendees at this year’s SGC conference in Chicago, there’s no shortage of upcoming opportunities to get together with the print community on a fairly large scale. In chronological order…

First up, this fall Impact 6 will be hosted by the Centre for Fine Print Research at the University of West England in Bristol, UK. Impact is easily the most global of print conferences with each taking place in a different country. Estonia, Poland and South Africa are a few of the past host countries. It’s happening this year from September 16th-19th and features over 40 speakers on 12 panels. According to the paperwork, there will be over 70 exhibitions throughout the city. The first Impact conference was organized by the CFPR in 1999 so this is a homecoming…

The return of IMPACT to Bristol coincides with the recent opening of new studios for both the Faculty at UWE and the Centre for Fine Print Research, where current research within print extends from colour science and wide format digital printing, to rapid prototyped 3D printing, laser cutting and the application of print to practices such as artists’ books, ceramics and enamel on metal.

Stephen Hoskins from the CFPR was part of a really good panel on technology at SGC Chicago. If you can afford the plane ticket, Impact 6 is a great opportunity to see in person the exciting stuff they’re working on at the CFPR.

Next spring, Philagrafika 2010 will be happening in Philadelphia, PA. Philagrafika, in addition to being a print organization, is also the name of a city-wide celebration of printmaking that will span a few months and will feature a centerpiece exhibition called The Graphic Unconscious guided by artistic director José Roca. Coinciding with that, from March 24-27 will be the annual Southern Graphics Council (ahem) International conference titled Mark Remarque. The conference will be co-hosted by Moore, PAFA, Philagrafika, Penn, Tyler/Temple, and UArts.

Grab your tri-cornered hat and get cracking, would-be participants! Panel, portfolio, and demo proposals are due by May 1, 2009. Philly is a great town and Printeresting is excited for an excuse to spend some time there.

In the Fall of 2010, Mid-America Print Council will be having it’s biennial conference in Minneapolis, MN. The University of Minnesota will be hosting the conference titled, “New World/Old World.” Beyond that, info is a little thin. MAPC has a reputation for more intimate conferences and I’ve heard a number of people express a preference for its slightly smaller, more manageable scale. There is a conference website but it’s not working at the moment. We’ll let you know more, when we know more.

Lastly, in the Spring of 2011, SGC will be hosted by Washington University in St. Louis. We’re two years away from this one so not surprisingly, info is scarce. in addition to schools, St. Louis is home to a number of printshops (Pele Prints, All Along Press, Tom Huck’s Evil Prints, Firecracker Press, Wildwood Press, etc.), some great young galleries (Snowflake/Citystock, Boots, White Flag Projects, etc.) as well as Stephen Kinsella Paper. It should be a good one. Again, we’ll keep you posted as information is announced.

If you know more about any of these upcoming conferences, feel free to add info to the comments section of this post.
