Maiden and Moonflower

Although I’m not a diehard Kiki Smith fan, I do love her collaboration with Studio Printworks called “Maiden and Moonflower.” Together, they’re producing screenprinted wallpaper made from her drawings. It’s offered in a number of colorways – I personally prefer the neutrals (see above).

This project seems to be following a trend of high end designers collaborating with mass market retailers. Yet, Kiki Smith is so thoroughly immersed in the “art world” that she’s an unlikely pick. I enjoy the fact that Studio Printworks is willing to engage in less commercial partnerships.

Pricing isn’t mentioned (and I’m not even sure it’s available to the public) – but inch for inch, I’m sure it’s a smart buy. It could work to frame a yard, or splurge and cover an entire wall in Ms. Smith’s drawings.

Kiki Smith is so prolific it’s almost scary. I wouldn’t have predicted it but now that I see it, breaking into the home furnishings business seems almost inevitable. I have a feeling that wallpaper may be just the beginning.

I’m holding out for her to do plush toilet bowl lid covers.
