Yinka Shonibare Produces Monsters

The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (Europe, Australia, Asia, America) by Yinka Shonibare, part of the artist’s show at James Cohan Gallery. As the cover image of last month’s Art in America; probably not news to you. I just want to point out the impressive taxidermy, which somehow captures the utterly weird sensibility of Goya’s hand:

Wonderful presentation of marvelously fantastic images. Your use of the word “taxidermy” is especially apt, and appreciated.

I honestly dislike it. The portrayers are too relaxed, where in the original, you can tell a little better that he is not having fluffy dreams. The two better ones are the top left with the gentleman in the glue jacket and green slacks and bottom right with the gentleman in the letter jacket and purple slacks.

*blue jacket, not glue jacket. Haha. Silly mistakes!
