“The World’s Largest Prefabricated Pictorial Ceramic Tile Mural”
It seems that universities are stocked with hidden design gems – from mid-century modern furniture, to architecturally significant buildings, to murals. Here at the University of Wyoming, the Classroom Building houses “The World’s Largest Prefabricated Pictorial Ceramic Tile Mural.” It’s a mouthful, but this four part tile-mural (isn’t that the same thing as a mosaic?) is pretty amazing.
Perhaps I feel this way because intermixed with the buffalo and hunters – neither of which I’ve chosen to include – there is some imagery that looks very contemporary (it was made in 1967). Fragmented figures, the intersection of art and geometry, prefabricated parts – it all sounds ahead of its time. Also, I think it’s interesting to think about it in terms of using a simple unit, a square tile, a pixel, to create a larger image. It’s a worthwhile stop on my walk into work.
