The Present Group

The Present Group is an Oakland-based art subscription service that produces small editions of artist multiples. Apparently the curators are looking for a wide range of work: “sculpture, video, printmaking, books, photography or conceptual work,” although so far they’ve mostly produced prints and books.

The current subscription costs $150 per year, which is very reasonable: subscribers receive four quarterly works, along with supplemental materials (including critical writings about the new editions). Selected artists receive four works from the edition, plus a $500 honorarium.

They describe themselves as “a mutual fund that creates art instead of profits.” This strikes me as a misunderstanding of what a mutual fund is, but hey! They’re making art, people are buying it, and artists are getting paid. What could be better?
