Artist Editions at The Gap

This is something strange… I guess it was only a matter of time… The Gap, yes The Gap, is now selling t-shirts in conjunction with the Whitney Biennial. From Kerry James Marshall to Sarah Sze to Barbara Krueger (pictured below), there’s an all-star lineup of blue-chippers for sale at your local mall. Finally, affordable objects d’arte (though at $28-38 per shirt, some might argue about affordability). I’m all for the intersection of art and commerce but is there really a market for this?

There’s a market. I’d probably wear a Kerry James Marshall shirt, and I’d love to have a Sarah Sze.
Plus, thirty dollars is not all that pricey for t-shirts anymore. Take a look at the prices for American Apparel, even when bought in bulk. Then consider two or three layers of Plastisol, plus labor.
Of course, I won’t get one, because I’m a cheap loser and clothes from the Gap are terrible. Plus, the example shown looks like a lousy cut: it resembles an XXL Hanes Beefy T.
