Wow. Truth stranger than fiction. I don’t even know what to say about this CBS story titled, “Cardboard Soldiers Help Families Cope: Cut-out Replicas Keep Loved Ones Company While Overseas” from back in 2006.

Thanks to a popular family-support program run by the Maine National Guard, he is never far from his family’s thoughts. The program supplies life-size cutouts of deployed service members to relatives back home.

And later in the article…

The cardboard version of Bailey also sits with the family at the dinner table, something that Jennifer Bailey said “freaks out” visitors.

I looked for pictures of these cardboard soldiers but for obvious reasons of privacy, there weren’t any available. I did find a UK-based website that sells generic life-sized cardboard soldiers

Play toy soldiers with this imposing US soldier. Rifle ready, he’s perfect for frightening off unwanted intruders! Stand to attention!
