“I Got a Crush… on Obama’s Poster” Part II

Robert’s comments on the first Obama post peaked my curiosity and once I started looking around, I was amazed to find so many variants and parodies on the Obey political poster.

Obeythepurebreed features a ridiculous quantity of pet-related merch in the style of Fairey’s Obey campaign. Also on the site are somewhat cheap-looking Barack Obama and Ron Paul posters. As far as I can tell, these are offsets (as opposed to screenprints) so I don’t think would have the same physical impact. They don’t really have the same resonance as images either.

From Robert’s earlier comment… an anti-Obama parody version

And the Date Farmers limited edition screen print from an Upper Playground post

Here is a great article discussing Obama art. Somebody needs to organize an exhibition of the 2008 election propaganda!

And finally, here’s a site offering downloadable stencils that range in subject from Steven Colbert and Peter Griffin (of Family Guy fame) to, again, Obama and Paul. It’s this juxtaposition of politics and popular culture that ties the supposedly rebellious act of stenciling to fashion rather than message. It can be a professional wrestler as easily as could be a presidential candidate. Much of it seems to be related more to cult of personality rather than actual message.

I’m looking forward to “I Got a Crush… on Obama’s Poster” Part III.
